Have you ever done something or gone somewhere and the memory of it is just so incredible to you that you know you will never forget it? This was one of those times for me. I was sixteen years old, and it was Josh Groban!
I couldn’t believe it when I was presented with the opportunity to go see him perform at the Hollywood Bowl. It was a dream come true! Ever since his album “Closer” came out in 2003, I was a massive fan of his. Okay fine, I still am! Haha! I was so excited, it was literally all I could think about. It consumed my every waking moment!
It all started with my violin teacher. She had gotten wind of how much I loved him, and she had found out about an upcoming concert at the Hollywood Bowl. So she got a group together and asked my brother (also a fan) and myself to come, and our mom came too. It was such fun! Definitely one of the best nights of my entire life.
We got $50 seats, pretty far back, but we were there, so we weren’t complaining! When the show finally started I had to remember to breathe. It all happened so fast! Suddenly he was just there on stage. There were these big screens that showed a close up of him, but I had a hard time taking my eyes off the real man. I still couldn’t believe I was really there.
Now for the fun part! 😉 Yes, I had a serious “fan-girl” moment, the whole time. I stood up and screamed and cheered as hard as I could in-between every song! I reached octaves in my voice that I didn’t know were humanly possible. I was officially that person. And you know what? I still don’t regret a moment of it! It was so surreal.
About halfway through I realized that I should be recording it so that I can look back at it later. I quickly pulled out my very old phone and tried to record what I could. Unfortunately, that recording seems to have been lost now. That makes me really sad. But the memory is still intact! It was like it happened yesterday!
I also got to hear him play drums for the first time ever in person. I have a bit of a soft spot for percussionists.. I’m not sure why, but I do. And I knew that he played, but here I was witnessing him play! I was ecstatic!
Of course, it’s Josh Groban.. anyone who knows anything about him knows he has quite a sense of humor. He started telling jokes in-between songs, and maybe it was just me, but they were so funny! I tend to like quirky humor and his humor is exactly that. 😉
Finally, the night ended. The concert was done and my heartbeat started to slow down a bit. He was gone. He left as suddenly as he came. We started getting up to leave and I was quiet. I had to savor that experience, I didn’t want it ruined by conversation. And then I spotted it.. We were passing by a table that was selling Josh Groban t-shirts! I simply had to have one! So I begged and pleaded with my mother to please, please let me have one! She finally gave in and got my brother and I the t-shirts. We both still have them. I only wear mine every now and then, because I don’t want it to get spoiled.
This was probably — most definitely — the most important thing that happened for me while I was 16. It happened almost 5 years ago now, but I still remember it pretty clearly. I still enjoy the memories and the feelings of 16-year-old me excited to see Josh Groban in concert for the very first time. I also very much plan on seeing another one hopefully sometime soon.
Thanks so much for reading along! If you enjoyed it, leave a like and comment! I’d love to hear your thoughts about your favorite singer or memories. 🙂
