My 21st

My 21st

It’s my birthday on Tuesday. Where has the time gone?! It seems like yesterday when I was a 13-year-old little girl excited to finally be a teenager. Now I’m turning 21. When did that happen?!

I remember when I couldn’t wait to be 16 because it was a milestone. 16 was the cool kid age. All I wanted in life was to be 16 and be cool.

Then I turned 17. That was not cool. I couldn’t wait to be 18. All I wanted was to be 18 and an adult.

Little did I know that being an adult at 18 didn’t really change anything. I was out of high school but I had a load of adult responsibilities. In other words, I still wasn’t happy.

Then 19 happened. I got saved that year, so that was a great year.

Right before 20, I had a breakdown because I was about to be entering a new decade. I didn’t know what to do or what I’d accomplished. Life at that point just kinda plummeted. Later in this year, I decided to leave college and work more. It’s been a crazy year. A crazy, short, incredibly hectic year, but it hasn’t all been bad. Some of it’s been really great.

Now I’m turning 21. I’m not nervous or excited or depressed or happy or anything. It’s just another year in my life. I stopped feeling different on my birthdays at like 13. I’m not expecting to feel different on my birthday this year. I’m not really sure what I’m expecting actually. It’ll probably just be another Tuesday for me. It’ll be a special day, but I doubt I’ll feel any older.

I’m opting for a more conservative approach to my 21st birthday. I’m not gonna go get drunk or party hard or anything like that. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve never been a party person. It’s just not me. I’d prefer to stay in and watch a good movie or read a book or play with the dogs. It doesn’t take much to make me happy.

To all the kids out there who can’t wait to grow up: wait. Just wait.

Growing up is a trap. Enjoy your childhood while you can.

I guess Peter Pan knew what he was talking about! Neverland? If only!
